Present Status and Education of Digestive Endoscopy in Korea

Abstract
A survey was done on the participants of the previous education seminar. Eighty two endoscopists from 67 instituties had replied and 50 practitioners replied for a total of 132 that were surveyed and analyzed.
1) Of the 67 hospitals surveyed, the number of endoscopic specialists range from 1~2 persons in 51.0%, 3~4 in 38.0% and 5 or more in 12.0%. The number of the paramedical assistants range from 1~2 persons in 72.0%, 3 in 11.0%, 4 in 6.0% and 5
persons in
8.0%.
2) The number of endoscopic examination tables range from 1~2 tables in 70.2%, 3 in 20.0% and over 4 tables in 9%. Of the 67 hospitals, 29% have separate rooms for the upper and lower endoscopic exams, and 32.0% have an independent ERCP room.
Endoscopic finding reports are organized in endoscopy room records (62.0%), by computer storage(23.0%) and in patients charts(17.0%).
3) The functional aspects of endoscopy in many hospitals are as follows: (the figures represent the mean number of exams per year, and the parentheses represent the numbers per month.)
Hospital type Upper GI Lower GI ERCP
A 7906(695) 202(17) 228(19)
B 3216(286) 244(20) 113(9)
C 1715(143) 105(17) 55(5)
4) Postgraduate endoscopic training is enforced in 70.6% of the 67 hospitals, and ideas for effective education methods include actual training with patients(76.8%), CCTV(13.4%), and the use of models (9.8%). At the present time, only 29.9% of
the
training hospitals are satisfied with their endoscopy education program.
According to the above results, goals for the future development of the present status of education and digestive endoscopy are to achieve the following.
1. An elaborately planned and systematized education program.
2. Actual training through appropriate clinical practices based on recent studies, and also various live demonstration.
